DIEPENBROCK, Alphons

DIEPENBROCK, Alphons
(1862–1921)
Composer and man of letters. Diepenbrock studied classics, and as a musician, he was self taught. He tried to renew Roman Catholic churchmusic. Most of his compositions are vocal, inspired by German Romanticism, Richard Wagner (1813–1883), and Giovanni da Palestrina (c. 1525–1594). Diepenbrock chose his texts from old Dutch literature, his contem poraries Jacques Perk (1859–1881) and Albert Verwey (1865–1937), and modern French symbolists.
